Evergreen Day School teachers regularly bring up the topic of race with our children in a way that is developmentally appropriate.
Today Green Room friends read the book Martin’s Big Words by Doreen Rappaport, illustrated by Bryan Collier. In preparation for Monday’s holiday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we discussed how many people contribute to the continued struggle for equality and respect.
As preschool teachers we help our students become aware of the past in a developmental way, and guide them toward justice in the present. Being kind is a way of life.
Through a cooperative hands-on concrete baking project children were able to notice and discuss the differences of how eggs look on the outside, and how they are the same on the inside. After baking, friends had fun tasting what they made! Yum!
Lessons we model for our children- we all have different skin colors, but on the inside, we are all the same. We all want to feel safe and happy, and we all take care of our friends!
